Level II Trauma Center Services

CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi—Memorial is one of only 10 Level II Trauma Centers in Texas and the only one to cover the 12 regions of South Texas. The designation as a Level II Trauma Center reinforces the dedication to excellence, education, injury prevention, and research for the community that Memorial has always focused on.

What is a Level II Trauma Center?

A trauma center is not an emergency department, but a state-accredited facility capable of highly-specialized timely treatment for the most critical of injuries. To qualify for this designation, a hospital must:

  • Require a certain number of trauma surgeons and that all medical and surgical specialties be immediately available to the trauma surgeon who directs the care of the patient.
  • Provide hospital staffing dedicated to trauma in every area of the hospital – everything from nursing to rehabilitation and environmental services.
  • Assure the availability of clinical resources both medical and surgical.
  • Provide access to air transport via helipad.
  • Assure available consultation to rural areas via 24-hour referral phone number.
  • Provide trauma education, outreach, and injury prevention.

CHRISTUS Spohn's dedicated trauma team is comprised of many highly knowledgeable, skilled and experienced team members that work together to provide the best care possible. Learn more about each one of them here.

Many people think that Trauma response starts and ends in the Emergency Department, but that is not the case. Trauma treatment begins when the first responders arrive at the scene, through initial evaluation, treatment and hospitalization and continues through rehabilitation and follow-up care. Every department in our hospital is involved in trauma care.
